River Cruise Itinerary

  1. Day 1
    Ho Chi Minh City
    Mon, Jan 31, 2028

Founded as a small fishing village, Ho Chi Minh City is now Vietnam's largest city. Though still commonly called Saigon, locals are as likely to simplify the name of their hometown to HCMC. No matter what you call it, it is a seamless blend of history and modern youthful energy, where pagodas and French colonial grandeur mingle with bustling old-world marketplaces and modern skyscrapers, all against a constant buzz of motor scooters and trill of bicycle bells. From enduring, narrow alleyways to wide, Parisian-style boulevards, Ho Chi Minh City has an identity all its own.

  2. Day 2
    Ho Chi Minh City
    Tue, Feb 01, 2028

Ho Chi Minh City is a heady mix of French and Vietnamese cultures, where baguettes and croissants are sold alongside pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) and motor scooters buzz past colonial-era architecture. The city's wide boulevards are reminiscent of Paris, lined with jewels such as the Opera House, fashioned after the Petit Palais, and the grand Central Post Office, designed by Gustave Eiffel. Aromatic food stalls and colorful shops purvey local specialties and all manner of Vietnamese wares, from conical hats to ao dai, the traditional silk tunic worn by women.

  3. Day 3
    Ho Chi Minh City
    Wed, Feb 02, 2028

Despite Ho Chi Minh City's densely packed urban districts, there are several green spaces that can be enjoyed. In Tao Dan Park, locals can be spotted engaging in their daily morning exercise with a round of badminton, tai chi or the outdoor gym equipment. Afternoons welcome a number of classes, from aerobics to dance, attracting good-sized crowds. In addition to the wide open spaces, there are a variety of walking trails shaded by towering trees as well as water features and ponds to be admired.

  4. Day 4
    Cái Bè
    Thu, Feb 03, 2028

A feast for the senses, Cải Bè is a Vietnamese enclave nestled among the lacework of waters of the Mekong Delta. Surrounded by fruit orchards, this small town with a charming village air boasts remarkably preserved old houses in its Đông Hòa Hiệp Commune. Village life here centers on the waters of the delta, with local homes built on stilts along the shore. The region is also known for Cải Lương, a Vietnamese-style folk opera that mixes ballads and theater with storylines focused on rural life.

  5. Day 5
    Tân Châu
    Fri, Feb 04, 2028

A thriving border town on Mekong shores, Tân Châu occupies a rural district in the delta of Vietnam. Founded in the mid-18th century, its growing population has earned it an upgrade to a township. High-quality silk is produced here, skillfully woven in delicate traditional patterns and expertly dyed in bright colors. Sedge grass weaving is another long-held tradition, producing mats, baskets and other useful items. The surrounding terrain, crisscrossed by canals and smaller rivers, is mostly flat and supports rice fields and other agriculture.

  6. Day 6
    Phnom Penh
    Sat, Feb 05, 2028

Time seems to have passed by Phnom Penh. Once known as the "Pearl of Asia,” this bustling Cambodian capital is home to charming French colonial architecture along relaxed boulevards, beautifully wrought pagodas and the monumental Angkorian complexes for which Cambodia is revered. The city's park-like riverfront boasts plenty of inviting cafés and restaurants, and its rich collection of universities, museums and other institutions have grown into Cambodia's center of cultural heritage.

  7. Day 7
    Phnom Penh
    Sun, Feb 06, 2028

Twice chosen as Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh's history is punctuated with periods of Khmer and French rule. More recently, the city has experienced rapid urbanization and has enjoyed a thriving cultural and food scene. Although often shadowed by the more well-known cuisine of neighbors Thailand and Vietnam, traditional Cambodian fare represents the flavors and techniques of one of the world's oldest surviving culinary traditions: Khmer cuisine. In Phnom Penh, opportunities abound to sample its signature dishes, from savory fish amokto fresh nom banh chok rice noodles.

  8. Day 8
    Scenic Sailing: Mekong River
    Mon, Feb 07, 2028

Journey along the Mekong and understand why it is truly the "Mother River of Southeast Asia,” sustaining civilizations through the centuries. Pass Mekong rice fields, villages and towns that seem frozen in time, and see ample evidence of the river's role in farming and fishing. A lush landscape of evergreen and broadleaf forests drapes across flat landscapes that rise to rugged peaks. As the river opens up to the Vietnamese delta, narrow rivulets lead to inviting floating markets where all manner of the earth's bounty is sold from ubiquitous longboats.

  9. Day 9
    Kampong Cham
    Tue, Feb 08, 2028

Approaching the capital city of Kampong Cham province by boat demonstrates why its name means "the port of the Cham people”. The Kizuna Bridge over the river, opened in 2001, is the first span to cross the Mekong in Cambodia. Koh Paen island rests in the middle of the river and hosts Khmer and Cham villages that are mounted on stilts in anticipation of high water season. The streets of Kampong Cham itself spread away from the Mekong River and exude a pleasant French colonial charm.

  10. Day 10
    Siem Reap
    Wed, Feb 09, 2028

Gateway to the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat, Siem Reap boasts an atmospheric Old French Quarter where colonial-style buildings stand alongside Chinese architecture. Everywhere there is evidence of its place in history as a city with strong ties to its rural past. Still, Angkor Wat gets much of the attention; the UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, drawing not only historians and archaeologists but also the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Kennedy.

  11. Day 11
    Siem Reap
    Thu, Feb 10, 2028

The lasting legacy of the Khmer Empire is evident across many parts of Southeast Asia. The Khmer were known for their construction skills and ability to establish economic links with societies across the continent, trading in rice, fish and other goods via the Mekong River. The Khmer civilization was deeply embedded with Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, which are reflected in much of the country's ancient architecture. The majestic monuments of Angkor Wat and Bayon pay tribute to the Khmer's vast power and wealth, which at its peak was larger than Europe's Byzantine Empire.

  12. Day 12
    Siem Reap
    Fri, Feb 11, 2028

From Siem Reap, a number of stunning smaller temples can be explored. The ruins of Ta Prohm Temple, featured in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, is a fascinating sight, with its collection of towers, courtyards and corridors of delicately carved stone enveloped by the vast roots of banyan trees. The center of Siem Reap enjoys a vibrant atmosphere with eateries offering a range of local and international cuisine, as well as stores that are open until late selling a variety of goods, from Khmer art and jewelry to handmade silks and lacquerware.

  13. Day 13
    Hanoi
    Sat, Feb 12, 2028

A French-conceived colonial city, no other destination better represents the contrasting nature of modern Vietnam than Hanoi. It was the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954 and today boasts one of the most beautiful panoramas in the region, with more cultural sites than any other city in Vietnam. Amid more than 600 pagodas and temples, Hanoi's Old Quarter displays the original streets and architecture from the early 20th century. A stroll along its historic streets is like stepping back in time.

  14. Day 14
    Hanoi
    Sun, Feb 13, 2028

At the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter lies a labyrinth of narrow streets that, despite the noise levels, are well organized. Amid the bustle, a pattern of trade emerges from the street names, each dedicated to the products that have been produced and sold here for centuries. From Hàng Bạc (silver) to Hàng Bồ (baskets) and Hàng Bông (cotton) to Hàng Đào (silk), just about any item can be found at a store or market stall alongside a variety of Vietnam's famous street food vendors.

  15. Day 15

Bid farewell to your fellow guests and journey home. Or spend more time exploring, perhaps joining one of our extensions.

Great service! operator was very helpful with our special requests and was able to meet them.

Be prepared to be "on-the-go" every day during the trip. Food was excellent. Excursions were well done. Ship was clean and smartly decorated. Met many nice people.

This was our second Viking River Cruise. The first cruise was almost exactly two years prior on the Rhine River and was perfect, which made my expectations for this trip higher than they had a right to be. Due to a hotter and dryer than normal summer, river levels on the Danube were too low. Our Viking Cruise ship could not make it to Budapest nor could it sail past Passau, which resulted in our first night at a hotel instead on the Viking Gullveig. The Hilton Hotel was beautiful and in a great location but not what we had signed up for. Upon reaching Passau our itinerary was changed because of the number of river cruise ships that were forced to make adjustments. We spent two nights docked in an industrial area instead of Viking's usual dock. Our visit to Regensburg required a 90 minute bus trip each way and the included tour of Nuremburg would require a 3 hour bus trip each way for a 4 hour walking tour. In place of Nuremburg, we opted for a shorter trip into Linz, Austria and were given a credit to be used on the ship. Viking also provided a larger credit to compensate for the overall issues with the cruise. I believe that Viking, as a company did much to make up for problems over which they had no control. My wife and I have a future Viking ocean cruise booked and will be able to use the credits on that trip; other people (especially first timers who only have this experience to judge Viking as an organization and river cruising in general) may simply lose out by not booking a second Viking cruise within the year for credit expiration. One issue that I have concerns our Viking arranged flights. We were to fly from Nuremburg to Frankfort to London only to find upon our arrival at the Nuremburg airport that our flight to Frankfort was cancelled. No reason was offered. We were given a voucher for a taxi to the Frankfort airport and we arrived with time to spare before our next flight. We paid for air travel from Nuremburg to Frankfort, not a taxi ride and believe we should receive some compensation for that change as well. Overall, I still rank Viking as the best cruise line and would not hesitate to book additional cruises. I must point out that our cruise director on this trip and all of the staff did their very best under difficult circumstances to make this an enjoyable trip.

I very much liked the passenger size of 200. I don't care for the large capacity ships. I felt like I received much better personal service

Marianne was extremely helpful in planning our trip and making arrangements for air. She was also helpful during the trip when a question arose. We will definitely book through Marianne. She is professional, efficient and knowledgeable and friendly. She makes you feel personally cared for.

Our Viking cruise on the Danube was amazing! Really exceeded our expectations.

I was thoroughly happy with my trip and booking thru Affordable Tours.

Viking is a first class operation. The staff was always helpful and professional. The accommodations and food were excellent. The only negative comment that I have is the amount of time it took to get to Salzburg was not adequately conveyed in the description/itinerary. It took almost 2 1/2 hours to get there and the same to get back to the ship. The tour was good, however, if we knew that the travel time was going to be 5 hours, we probably would not have signed up. the alternative was to tour Passau which I understand from other "cruisers" was a very quaint and enjoyable town.

Viking River Cruises is first class. We had an excellent experience as first time river cruisers. The tour guides were the most knowledgeable and professional in their area of expertise. They were also entertaining! We have only positive things to say about our cruise!!

Excellent tour and from start to finish everything was top notch!

Food was very good - not great but plenty good enough. Cruise ship food is just as good. The cruise was very organized and stress free. The cruis director did a terrific job and the non-balcony room was fine.

The only negative about this trip is that the WiFi connection on the Viking ship was quite poor. My phone would not connect to their WIfi but my Samsung table would connect. However, in general the Wifi was quite a bit slower than we are used to. Never the less the service and organization was fantastic. The food was very high quality. I would mention also, that the river cruise on the Danube at this time of year was quite calm so no worries for someone like me who is prone to motion problems.

Loved the service and the food. Very friendly staff.

Any time I had a question it was answered promptly and professionally.

Our Travel Consultant, Donna, went out of her way to make me feel comfortable with the whole process of booking my trip. I would call with questions and she made sure I knew the answer before we ended emails or phone calls. Donna made me feel like I was her only customer, and was always happy to answer my questions.
