- Day 1PassauFri, Apr 14, 2028
Founded by the Celts over 2,000 years ago, Passau is one of Bavaria's oldest cities. Known as the "City of Three Rivers,” it rests at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers. The city has long enjoyed its strategic position and grew to great economic and political power because of it. The legacy of its past prosperity lives on in graceful arcades, colorful houses with rococo facades and the glorious baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to one of Europe's largest pipe organs. Passau is also where two nations meet; it is here that the German-Austrian border begins.
- Day 2PassauSat, Apr 15, 2028
The pride of Passau, the massive organ in the baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral is one of the largest outside the United States. As with most organs of its size, it grew gradually over centuries. Today, it actually comprises five separate organs that carry varied tonal qualities and attending a concert in its elegant cathedral setting is truly an uplifting experience. Outside the heart of the city lies rural Bavaria, with its picturesque rolling hills and verdant green pastures. Some of the region's best-loved products are produced here, from its prized hams and sausages to its milk and delicious alpine cheeses.
- Day 3LinzSun, Apr 16, 2028
Originally known as Lentia in its days as a 1st-century Roman castle-settlement, Linz is today's provincial capital of Upper Austria. The city's famous Linzer Torte, the jam-filled cake topped with almonds, hails from here and can be found in any number of cafés. In the Old Town, narrow lanes lead to the Hauptplatz, once the largest town square in Austria. Handsome patrician houses, the 17th-century Town Hall and an impressive cathedral line the open space. The steepest mountain railway in Europe delivers visitors to Pöstlingberghill and its 18th-century pilgrimage church.
- Day 4KremsMon, Apr 17, 2028
A small university town at the eastern end of the Danube's Wachau Valley, Krems is surrounded by terraced vineyards. In its heyday, during the 12th century, Krems held even more importance than Vienna for its iron, grain, salt and wine trade. As to the latter, the city has played a long and celebrated part in the popularity of the Wachau's wine culture; the valley's south slopes in Krems are bathed in sunlight all day and create some of the best Riesling and Veltliner wines in the world. The city's cobblestone streets, taverns, wine bars and coffeehouses have a timeless appeal.
- Day 5ViennaTue, Apr 18, 2028
Renowned as the "City of Waltzes,” Austria's capital city of Vienna is Europe's center of classical music. Strauss and Mozart composed many of their finest pieces here. Vienna's musical history is matched by the elegant, graceful architecture that lines the Ringstrasse, the wide boulevard encircling the Inner City. Baroque, neo-Renaissance, Gothic-Romanesque and other splendidly styled structures, from the Hofburg Palace to the Vienna State Opera, take the breath away with their grand facades. Vienna has a more intimate side too: inviting footpaths lead through green parks and its famed Viennese cafés sweeten any stay with coffee and the city's delectable Sachertorte.
- Day 6BratislavaWed, Apr 19, 2028
The Slovakian capital of Bratislava is filled with lovingly restored baroque city palaces and leafy squares. The Little Carpathians rise steeply in the north and the enormous hrad ("castle”) perches 300 feet above the Danube, lending the city a picturesque setting. Below the castle, the Old Town boasts elegant mansions, art nouveau houses and gracious pedestrian zones. Eleven Hungarian kings and eight queens were crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral, today a concert hall that plays a central role in the city's rich cultural offerings.
- Day 7BudapestThu, Apr 20, 2028
Riverside beauty and a vibrant cultural scene blend together in Budapest to form one of Europe's most rewarding cities. Hungary's enchanting capital straddles the banks of the Danube, with traditional hillside Buda on one side and modern Pest on the other. By day, stunning art nouveau buildings, stalwart castles and grand palaces set the stage for inspiring strolls and long soaks in thermal spas. By night, the shimmering lights of the Parliament building dance across the waters of the Danube, the Chain Bridge uniting it all as a dramatic centerpiece.

Questions & Answers Ask A Question
Question: Will the day-by-day itinerary change?
Question: In what language is the river cruise conducted?
Viking River Cruises is first class. We had an excellent experience as first time river cruisers. The tour guides were the most knowledgeable and professional in their area of expertise. They were also entertaining! We have only positive things to say about our cruise!!
We experienced a wonderful journey along the Danube river (from Budapest to Regensburg). Our room was very clean and all the programs was exactly as they were explained.
The Viking experience is wonderful! They provide first class service - this includes check in, excursions, dining, housekeeping, maintenance issues, etc. This was our 2nd Viking River Cruise and it too exceeded our expectations.
Viking is the right luxury level for us.
Steve did a great job, even though Viking messed up a few times.
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Shannon's help changing the return flights made a big difference.
Our trip was wonderful. Everything was very organized. The New York Hotel in Budapest was fabulous. Can't say enough positives about our trip.
This was my 2nd trip with Viking. As before, everything was perfect ---food, service and accommodations were outstanding.
Viking is good company striving to provide top notch service. However, there are a lot of areas needing work. All's fine when things go right. It is difficult to get things right when their IT services are needed. Operator needs to pay attention to the needs of the customer. Pricing policies and fares charged vary considerably and unreasonably. My optional tour bookings were screwed up and in spite of repeated calls could not be fixed. However the ship staff was fabulous and worked hard - on things they could effect.
The river cruise was very good, but the flight arrangements by Viking were terrible and confusing. Originally, my wife and I were booked on separate flights and even after this was straightened out we did not sit together with our friends on the Air Canada Rouge flight to Budapest. We took 2 small planes from Newark to Toronto and Nuremberg to Zurich which could not accommodate carry on bags (including a propeller plane) and we had to climb down steps to the tarmac to get on and off the small planes.. We had to be out of the cabin by 9am on the final day of the cruise but our flight was not scheduled until 3pm and did not get to Newark until 11 hours later. The Air Canada Rouge flight was cramped and had bad food. In contrast the Swiss Air flight back home was much better.
The staff on this river cruise were excellent and very helpful. The travel arraignments very also very organized and helpful, This was the first time I planned a vacation without going with a group and I was well pleased.
The ship (VAR & TOR) are old and much smaller than other Viking ships I have been on. The bathroom (in a Veranda) is barely big enough for one person. There is only 8" on each side of the bed. The furniture in the lounge areas is old and very low-hard to get out of.
The trip was terrible. We barely did any sailing due to the drought and Viking did very little to make up for it. Horrible experience.
We ended up missing out on cruising the Danube due to low water level as we had to be motor coached from Regensburg to Passau to change ship. We also took the motor coach from Vienna to Budapest so we missed half a day at Budapest & also missed the view of the Parliament building at night as we spent our last night at a hotel. We understand that low or high water level is a possibility with river cruises. Viking knew this was an issue for sometime as it was a dry season, but waited to email us a little over a week prior to departure rather than earlier to allow us to reschedule or cancel. Better communication would have been appreciated.
