- Day 1LisbonThu, Apr 08, 2027
Lisbon has inspired explorers for centuries with its stunning setting at the Tagus River's mouth. Its labyrinthine streets carry echoes of 16th-century navigators who sailed on the winds of the Age of Discovery. The city prospered greatly from its trade. And today's streets are lined with the legacies of wealthy builders, including the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, stunning works that introduced Manueline architecture. Savoring local cuisine and port wine are favorite pastimes here. On any evening, the strains of fadospill from clubs in the historic Alfama District.
- Day 2LisbonFri, Apr 09, 2027
Throughout Lisbon, fascinating monuments tell this proud city's story. Along the riverfront, in Praça do Comércio, an equestrian statue at its center represents Portugal's King José I, who capably rebuilt the city following the devastating 1755 earthquake. Among the most recognized of Lisbon's monuments is the grand Monument to the Discoveries on the banks of the Tagus River, displaying statues of more than 30 contributors to exploration, whose bravery and spirit still shape the culture of this vibrant European capital.
- Day 3PortoSat, Apr 10, 2027
Porto holds a place of great traditional importance. The town lends its name to the port wine produced in the region and throughout the nation. Located along a rocky embankment, the city boasts picturesque neighborhoods, fashionable restaurants and lively markets. Like Lisbon, Porto has a rich past; its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow cobblestone streets brimming with romantic buildings spanning the centuries and a Romanesque cathedral. At the riverside, small barcos rabelos, boats once used to transport casks of wine, paint a charming scene.
- Day 4RéguaSun, Apr 11, 2027
The peaceful town of Peso da Régua, commonly known as Régua, overlooks the Douro River with the Serra do Marão mountains as a stunning backdrop. In 1756, the Marquês de Pombal proclaimed this city as the center of his newly demarcated wine region, and it has remained so since. As such, the town is steeped in the wine-making culture. This is particularly true at Casa do Douro, the headquarters of the Port Wine Institute. Its beautiful stained glass windows are a tribute in light and glass to the rich history of port wine and its cultural significance to the region.
- Day 5Barca d'AlvaMon, Apr 12, 2027
Barca d'Alva is the last Portuguese town on the Douro River; this quaint river port is just a few hundred yards from the Spanish border. Cherry, almond and olive groves line the nearby banks, pointing the way to this unassuming frontier village. Its quayside sparkles in the Iberian sun, and it is the ideal port from which to truly appreciate the beauty of the Douro Valley. In either direction, terraced vineyards climb riverbanks and steep hills spill into river gorges. Simple cafés provide an authentic ambience and a bridge across the river leads to a picturesque photo opportunity of the village.
- Day 6SalamancaTue, Apr 13, 2027
Founded by a Celtic tribe before the rise of the Roman Empire, Salamanca was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its beautifully preserved buildings. It is home to one of Europe's oldest universities, founded in 1134, and its main square, bustling with students, is often called the most beautiful in Spain. The beauty of this richly historic city, besides the enormous Romanesque cathedral whose profile dominates the town, is the grace with which Salamanca retains a traditional Spanish village feel. It is a living museum that takes visitors back to the Middle Ages.
- Day 7PinhãoWed, Apr 14, 2027
Pinhão is surrounded by picture-postcard terraced hillsides that are synonymous with the Douro River Valley. Its slow pace and quiet atmosphere belie the fact that it produces world-renowned port wines; some of the most recognizable names in port production operate wine estates near here. One of the "station towns” along the Douro River, Pinhão boasts a relaxing and scenic promenade along the river, perfect for strolling and drinking in the beauty of vineyard-clad hills. The village's railway station is decorated with 24 spectacular scenes depicted in azulejos, Portugal's distinctive blue-and-white tiles.
- Day 8PortoThu, Apr 15, 2027
The magnificent 19th-century Luís I Bridge, designed by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1886, spans the Douro River to link Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. Known locally as "Gaia,” the city is central to Porto's role as a major producer of port. Here, amid ceramic, glass and soap factories, cellars of 58 companies fortify the prized wine. Visiting Gaia offers insight into how Douro River valley wines are transformed into some of the most sought-after ports in the world, and provides panoramic views of Porto, as many of the cellars are located on the banks of the river.
- Day 9PortoFri, Apr 16, 2027
Porto's prosperous future was sealed when the distinctive, single-masted barcos rabelos delivered the first wine shipments here from vineyards up the Douro River. Before the advent of the railroad, these wooden cargo boats provided the fastest and most efficient transport of wines between the Douro River valley's wineries and the city, from which bottles were exported all over the world. Today, the vessels are owned by port wine companies along the Douro. Though no longer in use, they still grace the river's edge nonetheless, enriching the city's character and cultural identity.

Questions & Answers Ask A Question
Question: Will the day-by-day itinerary change?
Question: In what language is the river cruise conducted?
We had a great trip on the Viking Delling (Avignon to Lyon). This is a trip that any wine lover will enjoy. Lot's of opportunities to visit wineries (and even an olive farm) and learn more about wine along the way on the day tours. Staff on board ship are incredible. Everything is first class.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Viking Rhine River Cruise.
Another superb Viking River Cruise experience. As advertised with usual level of service by the staff. Only issue was a change in optional excursions that was not communicated before departure.
Viking River Cruises are first rate. The onboard staff are all friendly and professional. We haven't met one yet that we thought was anything else but that. Itineraries are very interesting and the local tour guides really enhance any trip.
Affordable tours did a great job in booking our Viking cruise, Hue was very responsive to my questions. I highly recommend her. We were offered $300 per person for booking with Affordable tours on Viking cruises. However Viking charges a hefty percentage for proceess it, the $600 for the two of us should have amounted to 571 euros [exchange rate was 1.05 euros to one dollar]. Viking discounted the value of the $600 to only 518 euros which is pretty significant.
This was our second Viking cruise. We chose them again because they exceeded our expectations on our first cruise.
We've enjoyed excellent service from several different Affordable Tours agents over the years, but Jim Leary has been the best by far. He is knowledgeable, courteous, professional, and always promptly attentive in responding to our inquiries and requests. We will continue to seek out his assistance with our travel needs and recommend him to our friends and family members without reservation.
The Viking travel experience was truly first class in the boat, the stateroom, the service and the people. They were excellent in every aspect of making the vacation comfortable.
Trip was fantastic. Aside from airline cancellation and delays, the Viking Cruise lived up to our expectations.
This was our fourth Viking cruise, and we have never been disappointed. This company has consistently been excellent in terms of quality, service and value.
We were on the Viking Torgil. It was exceptional. The food was excellent and the ship/stateroom were immaculate. The staff, as always were extremely helpful. With Viking there is never a problem, as any issue that comes up is an opportunity for them to find a solution. This was our second tour with Viking. There will be more. We added on the extension in Lisbon. The hotel was great, as was the staff. Cannot recommend highly enough.
I was not made aware of the optional tours in Paris with the exception of the Montmartre tour.
Viking was outstanding in terms of customer service, quality of the food, the excursions that were included as well as the optional excursions. The ship is laid out well, our room was amazing and it was very relaxing. Viking was extremely organized and communicated the events of the day and next day. We had a great time and would sail with them again.
Tour behind the previous Iron Curtain¦..something I never thought would be possible. Sobering historical tours. Beautiful landscape. Wonderful art

I was truly taken aback at how Viking takes care of EVERY detail to insure travelers are safe and can enjoy the trip. When plans changed they were done seamlessly with little discomfort or anxiety to the travelers. For example, during one of our daily trip excursions there was a change of schedule and we were not going to be able to return to the ship for lunch so Viking gave everyone a $25 Euro credit on their shipboard account as most people were going to have to have lunch in town. Viking did this on their own. No one asked nor were expecting this which was a very thoughtful and pleasant surprise. Vienna a bunch of folks wanted to venture into town on their own and seeing this was appealing the Viking activities director decided to form an impromptu field trip to take everyone to town on the Metro Underground and escort them group to town so no one would get lost. They also gave everyone a map of the metro and easy instructions on how to return to the ship using the metro which was a the least expensive way to travel like a local. I HIGHLY recommend that Viking travelers take advantage of the pre-paid gratuities package offered as it really does remove that from the list of things to do as you leave the ship.
