- Day 1BaselTue, Dec 15, 2026
A delightful blend of old and new, Basel is Switzerland's best-kept secret. During the holiday season, the medieval Old Town is transformed into a magical yuletide affair. Cobblestone streets are lined with wooden chalet-style huts selling all manner of festive treats and gifts. Visitors to the Christmas market can enjoy a warming cup of aromatic glühwein in a decorated boot-shaped mug. Hand-carved tree decorations, cheerfully painted ceramics and delicious food are sold from stalls throughout the city.
- Day 2BreisachWed, Dec 16, 2026
In the heart of Breisach's old town with a backdrop of the Romanesque-Gothic St. Stephen's cathedral, the Weinachtsmarkt is a highlight of the season. Steaming aromatic glühwein served in decorated mugs, alongside tasty yuletide treats, is sold from festive wooden huts and taverns, keeping visitors warm as they browse market stalls for gifts and handicrafts. The nearby Black Forest provides a fairy-tale atmosphere; its towering, snow-covered spruce trees resemble a winter wonderland.
- Day 3StrasbourgThu, Dec 17, 2026
Strasbourg is said to be the capital of Christmas in France, with the city's cathedral square taking center stage as it is transformed into a winter wonderland. The city's Christkindelsmärik is the oldest in France, dating back to 1570. Hundreds of stalls are brimming with colorful wares, fine food and mulled wine, bringing festive cheer in abundance. Alsatian specialties feature an array of hearty classics, from bretzels (soft, bread-like pretzels) to bredele (star-shaped spiced cookies), and knacks (sausages) to pain d'epices (gingerbread).
- Day 4MannheimFri, Dec 18, 2026
Mannheim's Christmas market is a holiday season shopping extravaganza, centered around the city's iconic water tower. One of Germany's oldest and largest markets, more than 160 booths host vendors from around the world, offering handicrafts and handmade items. Beautiful glassware, and carved wooden toys and games, sit alongside Christmas lanterns, colorful baubles and ornaments, all of which are presented in quaint wooden houses. Luxurious cashmere scarves, sheepskin mittens and felt hats are the ideal purchase to take home as gifts for friends and family.
- Day 5Scenic Sailing: Middle RhineSat, Dec 19, 2026
The Rhine River flows through one of Germany's most scenic regions. As you sail its most picturesque stretch, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Middle Rhine, you will pass vineyard-blanketed hills whose steep slopes require vintners to pick grapes by hand, keeping a centuries-old tradition alive. Splendid castles line the banks, all of which have stories to share, and the Lorelei Rock presides at a dramatic curve in the river. This infamous river maiden mesmerized sailors with her song and lured them to their demise at her feet.
- Day 6CologneSun, Dec 20, 2026
Themed winter markets feature across Cologne during the holiday season, inviting visitors to browse colorful market stalls for handmade gifts, beautiful artwork and colorful crafts. The towering Gothic Cologne Cathedral provides a stunning backdrop to the city's festivities and array of offerings from its red wooden stalls. Beneath the pointed roofs of Cologne harbor's tented market, unique crafted goods are displayed amid the twinkling lights of boats bobbing in the marina.
- Day 7Scenic Sailing: Waal & MerwedeMon, Dec 21, 2026
Sail the bucolic waters of the Rhine, deep into the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt Delta, as classic Dutch landscapes unfurl all around. Flat farmland, charming windmills and svelte poplar trees line the shores, and vast tracts of land stretch in all directions, growing all manner of bounty, from tomatoes to tulips. Gaze upon Friesian cows and tidy villages with their neatly laid farmhouses and marvel at how much of this land was reclaimed from the sea, with the aid of traditional windmills and the construction of dikes.

Questions & Answers Ask A Question
Question: Will the day-by-day itinerary change?
Question: In what language is the river cruise conducted?
We did an extension at the end of the journey for the first time and it was exceptional. Way above our expectations.
Rick was easy to work with, he kept me informed and was able to upgrade my flight seats. Thank you.
Our second cruise with Viking, and again, it was a wonderful experience. Very, very friendly staff. They were always smiling and made us feel welcome. Great food. Great itinerary.
Love Shannon's helpfulness and expert knowledge when booking trips. This is my 4th trip with Affordable Tours and all 4 have exceeded my expections
We always enjoy working with Donna. She does an outstanding job for us. Viking is our favorite. We always receive a great trip itinerary. Thank you.
Marianne is the best travel agent ever in our opinion. She made this trip, like our earlier trips, a wonderful experience. Everything turned out great. Thanks so much and we will talk to you in the future when we travel again.
Allyson was so helpful with the arrangements for this trip to France. All questions and requests were taken care of in a very timely manner, often within the same day, and never more than one or two days. The trip more than met our expectations. It is not often you get the chance to say that the experience far exceeded the expectations, given how affordable the cost. Thank you Allyson.
Trip was well paced but active. The extension tour seemed expensive but was well worth the money. Due to fewer people, we were able to deviate from the planned tour for a better option recommended by our tour guide. Bought several gift certificates for future trips with Viking. highly recommend Viking!!!
Everything went exactly as planned. Thanks, Tahlon for your help!
Travel with Viking met and exceeded all of our travel expectations...including the transit plans, accommodations and the daily service. We will travel with Viking again...and Affordable Tours made it all happen efficiently.
The Viking employees were very helpful and professional.
Very happy with services, itinerary and tours provided by Viking. Staff is friendly and aim to please.
This was our fourth trip with Viking (3 River cruises and 1 Ocean Cruise). We enjoyed our trip overall but found areas that Viking could improve upon. Compared to our other trips, the scheduling of daily activities was too tight and we were often rushed at the end of a tour to get back to an event that was taking place onboard the river boat. We extended our trip to include Oxford with visits to Blenheim Palace and Highclere Castle; both of which were very interesting and worthwhile. The transfer from Paris to London and then on to Oxford was not well planned out and most of the 30+ guests taking the extension felt the same. Far too much time was taken to complete the transfer that began with a very early departure from the ship only to drag on most of the day with arrival at our hotels around 4PM or later. A twenty minute introductory walk in Oxford was offered within 45 minutes of check in at the hotels and again, most guests were pretty tired at that point. The visit to the Normandy Beaches along with the American Cemetery were interesting, and often emotional. The stop at Arromanche was once again not very well planned and guests complained that they did not have enough time to visit the museum. The overall impression of Arromanche was that of an overly commercialized area set up to let visitors shop for trinkets and trash. Frankly, with the exception of the short film about bridges that were built and moved into place after the landing, the stop at Arromanche was not particularly a high point. Visiting Omaha beach was a high point and the lunch at the Omaha Beach Golf Club was very well managed.
The boat did not dock in Paris, but rather an hours bus ride from town. On one of the "Paris" days, the transport was into town at 9:30 am and back out at 5:30 pm. That made it impossible to take advantage of the included tour in the afternoon. Other companies that I have done river cruises with provided multiple shuttles into and out of town.

I was very pleased how our travel consultant handled the booking with Viking Riverboat cruises. She saved me a lot of money with the discounts she gave me. I have been telling everyone to book through Affordable Tours instead of direct! I will use her for future tours.
